What to see and to do in the Cilento

The Cilento is a wide area in southern Italy which covers a vast territory ranging from the Apennines to the Tyrrhenian Sea and almost entirely within the boundaries of the National Park.

A land rich in history and rich in natural wonders. Numerous testimonies of a flourishing past blend with seascapes and mountains of incomparable beauty.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK OF VELIA
Velia, a city of Magna Graecia, was founded by Focesi from Alalia (Corsica) after they were founded (540 BC) by fleet of the Etruscans and Carthaginians. Acquired importance after the destruction of Sibari (Greek colony on the Gulf ion) and hosted the philosophers Parmenides and Zeno (the first founded in Velia, the philosophical school that was called Eleatica). The city fought with the neighboring Posidonia with Lucani and 389 BC joined the League Italiot. Then provided aid to Rome against Hannibal. After the war, social Velia was City Hall. Was destroyed by the Saracens in the eighth and the ninth century AC. In medieval times the lower part of the city was abandoned, and remained inhabited the Acropolis.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREA OF PAESTUM
Paestum, ancient Posidonia, was founded by Achei of Sibari in the VI century BC as a commercial center. Knowledge about the city for the VI and V century BC are derived from the study of the monuments. In the mid-fifth century Posidonia was to help the residents of Sibari in the reconstruction of their destroyed city from Crotone. Later it fell at the hands of Lucani. During the fourth century, the colony experienced a demographic expansion phase, between 335 and 331 it was conquered by Alexander the greek Molossi, but soon returned to power Lucani. In 273 BC there was deducted the Latin colony of Paestum and during the war, Hannibal, as a federal city, helped Roma. Paestum was inhabited until the Middle Ages and abandoned in the eighth century AC because of the Saracen invasions and expansion of the marshes.

CAVES OF CASTELCIVITA
The cave is a series of galleries, salons, and narrow wells, which run, overlap, collapse into fearful chasms and jump the ravine where the fantastic and alternate in a rainbow of colors, creating special unique: lemons, the face of a cherub, bunches of grapes, the great crib and "Pagoda"
